British construction worker dies at Qatar stadium site

A British construction worker has died while working on Qatar's Khalifa International Stadium, a 2022 World Cup venue.

The Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, the body charged with organising the World Cup, said in a statement

on its website: “A 40-year-old British male lost his life working on Khalifa International Stadium. The relevant authorities have been notified and the next of kin have been informed.

"An immediate investigation into the cause of this fatality is under way and further details will be released in due course," it said.

“The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy shares our deepest condolences with the family for their loss,” it added.

The 40,000-seat stadium will host the quarter finals of the tournament.

BBC said in its website that the man fell when the platform, used to manage sound and lighting, collapsed at the stadium on Thursday.

His safety harness was cut during the fall, it quoted Midmac-Six Construct, the construction contractor, as saying. The man was employed by a South African subcontractor, it said.

In a statement, construction firm Midmac-Six Construct said a lever hoist supporting the platform failed "for unknown reasons", adding that it was working with the local authorities to investigate.

"All of the partners involved in this project are devastated by such a tragic loss of life and we extend our deepest condolences to the victim's family, friends and colleagues," the statement said.
