Saudi high-speed rail project enters fast track

Work on the high-speed Haramain Express rail project in Saudi Arabia is progressing at a steady pace with 95 per cent of 450-km-long line - linking the key cities of Makkah and Madinah - already completed, said a report.

The remaining 20-km line, linking Jeddah to Makkah at the main station in Al Rusaifah district, will be laid within the next few months and the test urn of the train is expected to take place in December, reported The Saudi Gazette, citing the company responsible for the construction work of the project.

The Haramain Express train will connect Makkah and Madinah and will have stops in Jeddah, King Abdullah Economic City and Rabigh.

The company, which is part of an international consortium, had built 138 bridges over the expressways through which the train will pass and also over Al Haramain Road in Jeddah.

The builder had also dug a total of 840 underpasses to drain rain and floodwaters as part of the project, it added.
