Qatar awards $2.27bn power project contracts

Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) has awarded contracts worth QR8.3 billion ($2.27 billion) in line with its plan to strengthen infrastructure in the country's power sector, said a report.

The contract awards, one of the largest ever in the history of Kahramaa, is part of the Phase 13 of the ambitious Qatar Power Transmission System Expansion plan, reported The Gulf Times.

The scope of work includes construction of 77 sub-stations and laying of more than 450km of extra high voltage (EHV) cables, it stated.

The works would cover several upcoming residential projects spanning across Doha and its neighbourhoods, the economic zones under Manateq, stadiums, business centres, hospital projects and schools.

The big players signed up for sub-stations contract are Siemens AG & Siemens WLL consortium (Qatar); Larsen & Toubro (India); National Contracting Company (Saudi Arabia); Galfar & Misnad (Qatar) and Best & Betas Consortium (Turkey), while for EHV cable works Kahramaa has roped in LS Cable and System (N-Korea), Larsen & Toubro (India), Furukawa (Japan) and Elsewedy Cables (Qatar & Egypt), said the report.

Besides building new substations and laying cables, the work would also cover the upgrading of some of the existing substations, it added.
