New power distribution station opens at Bahrain airport

The new 220 kV power distribution station at the Bahrain International Airport was inaugurated yesterday (August 16) by Electricity and Water Affairs Minister Dr Abdulhussain Mirza.

The Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) chief executive officer Shaikh Nawaf bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa and senior officials attended the opening ceremony, said a Bahrain News Agency report.

The minister said that the inauguration of this project comes within the strategic plan to provide power required for the expansion of the Bahrain International Airport and expanding the electricity transmission networks in Bahrain.

The new station, built at a cost of BD17.243 million ($45.61 million), will feed the new airport terminal building. It is one of 15 such 220 kV facilities, along with 48 other 66 kV sub-stations, that will be installed in the Muharraq Governorate.

The EWA chief praised dedicated employees who completed the plant in record 12 months and thanked project consultants and contractors for following up and completing the station in time.

The supply and installation of the plant was undertaken by Swiss company ABB, while the transformers were supplied by Korean company HHI. The cables for the project were supplied by Saudi Cables.

The civil works of the plant were completed by Bahrain's Shabu Construction Company and electrical cable works by Alkomed Bahrain, while the implementation was supervised by the Irish Consulting Company ESBI.
