$579m infrastruture projects under way in Qatar

Qatar's Public Works Authority (Ashghal) is implementing more than 20 infrastructure development projects worth QR2.2 billion ($579 million) in the cities of Al Shamal and Al Ruwais in line with its preparation for the World Cup 2022, said a report.

The scope of work include roads, infrastructure and sewage network upgrade as well as public buildings projects in these two cities, reported The Gulf Times, citing a top official.

Some of these projects worth about QR1.4 billion have already been completed and preparations are under way to kick off a number of new projects including the Al Shamal City Centre for Health and Wellness, the contract for which was signed at the meeting yesterday with Al Jaber Trading and Contracting Company, remarked Ashghal chairman Dr Saad bin Ahmed Al Mohannadi.

On the other infrastructure projects, he said the work will begin on developing the road leading to the shrimp farms west of Al Shamal City and also the Huwailah road to link the area of Huwailah with Al Shamal Road besides another one leading to the Al Shamal ranches complex, in addition to the development of a number of roads in the Al Shamal city including those serving schools, truck parking, workers' housing and road improvement work within Al Shamal Municipality, he stated.

The scope of work includes rehabilitating the existing local and internal roads for a length of 73 km, establishing new internal 34-km-long roads and establishing a new sewage network with a length of 91 km, in addition to the construction of about 12 intersections, said the report.

Beside this, Ashghal also aims to complete 28 km of sidewalks and 8,000 parking spaces besides the installation of about 3,680 light poles and a thousand road signs in the region, it stated.

The project is planned to be completed in the third quarter of 2019, it added.
